Disqus Clout: Fail!

Share/Save/Bookmark Print This Post

clout-3Man, I really need to step up my commenting game. I’m not saying I need to game the system or whatever.. you know what I’m talking about.

Just look at it. It’s not good.

Even if you don’t know what clout is you can guess that three is pretty low. We aren’t playing golf here, the point isn’t to get as low as possible.

What is Disqus clout?

Glad you asked. Without going too deep into what the Disqus comment system is and how it is similar or different to other comment systems (including the one built-in to Wordpress), the high-level overview is that Disqus manages my comments on this blog, as well as comments on thousands of other blogs. Because these comments are managed centrally, on Disqus’ site, this means that people using the system to write a comment only need one login everywhere that Disqus is used.

phil button Aside from the convenience of a single login, this also means that each user gets assigned a clout value. By default the clout value is 1. When you comment on a blog, and someone likes your comment, they have the option of voting your comment up using a small arrow next to the comment. Each vote adds one to your clout. Conversely, they can vote you down as well, taking away a point.

clout-2

As you can see the official FAQ documentation is deliberately vague. I believe that clout can’t drop below 1 (at least, I’ve never seen negative clout), and right now, having a lot of clout points doesn’t really net you anything awesome except a certain kind of Disqus-specific prestige. So far.

So Lets Talk About My Clout

Yeah, so the point is, my clout is in bad shape. I’m not sure if this is because my commenting is spotty and of low-quality (probably) or people are forgivably forgetting to vote my comments up (they are busy, no worries), or there is a vast conspiracy to destroy my clout rating (they follow me wherever I go!) Whatever the reason, I am now on a campaign to get it higher. Take a look at some of my peers’ clout ratings:

Disqus User Site Clout
Corvida SheGeeks 33
Jangro Jangro 14
Scobelizer scobelizer 15
Paul Arterburn sixteenseven 15
StevenHodson WinExtra 29
Daniel Ha Obscurely Famous 190
Benjamin Golub benjamingolub.com 18

Ok, so putting Daniel Ha in there can be seen as cheating since he is a Disqus developer, and pretty much answers all the questions on the Disqus Blog and Forum.

Also, I cleverly didn’t list anyone who had less than 10 clout. Hey, it’s my blog.

What You Can Do To Help

Ok, so my goal is to provide more insightful and interesting comments on a wider variety of blogs using Disqus. What you as a Disqus user can do, to me and anyone else you notice writing a good comment, is to vote more. Or, if you are lazy, you can just vote me up.

I won’t complain. I promise.

  • good post with the right amount of humor - well done and I'll see what I can do about contributing to your clout :)
  • Excellent. You scratch my back, I scratch yours!
  • I never look at clout either. It's cool and all, but not something I have time to care about. Of course, your post made me go check made. I'm only at 10. Oh well, matches my avatar.
  • I'm tempted to vote your comment up just for spite! Mua-ha-ha!
  • Actually, I'm OK with that. :)
  • I never even look at someone's Disqus clout. I would expect it rewards those who comment most frequently, and wouldn't be so much a subjective view.
  • Easy for you to say, 16! Just kidding.

In fact I don't really care about my clout, but don't tell anyone. I just thought it was humorously low for the amount of commenting I make.

The REAL real reason I wrote the post is to put in a table. I love tables and with the advent of CSS, I don't get to use them as much as I used to! Also to provide links to some of the blogs I read.
  • Matt Shaulis
And a well used table it was indeed. (Nice to see tabular data put in a table vs. the wannabe-purists who insist that tables are evil and they crowd their poor markup/css with insane of amounts of crap to "replicate" the behavior of a table just to display data that OUGHT to have gone into a table. lol.)
  • Wow that was an impressively convoluted sentence.

My favorite obfuscated sentence comes from Monty Python (the Matching Tie and Handkerchief 3-sided vinyl LP):
"I think all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary decent people in this country are fed up with being sick and tired. I'm certainly not, and I'm sick and tired of being told that I am!"
  • Same. CSS is too easy to use, table has become obsolete "unofficially". Table now is strictly for tabular data, but what's stopping a webdev from using CSS to present tabular data? NONE! hehehehe
  • Hmmm... maybe I should make a Disqus clout post like Phil here and get my own clout bumped up 12 pts as well :P
  • Haha, hilarious write up.

Ok, our fault that we don't emphasize or clearly explain our clout system. At one point, the system was a big part of how Disqus worked. Right now we're downplaying it until we can truly improve its contextual meaning.

It's used for publisher control for the most part. You can filter based on points/clout. We're hearing some good ideas from people though.
  • Thanks Daniel! Glad you liked it! Hopefully I've started a bit of a discussion to help you guys get some ideas about where to take clout points.
  • I think one of the good features with the clout system is to move some great comments to the top in a long thread.
  • Good Post! Looks like your clout will improve drastically
  • Heck yeah! Just hit 10! Booyah!
  • You are now THE MAN ;)
  • Did I mention my clout is now at 21? See what happens when you get distracted for a couple of days. (Well OK.. weeks!)
  • Matt Shaulis
Yeah... I always forget to click the arrows on comments I like/hate.... I think I'm with Louis (there's a surprise) on this one. it is a biased mechanism. Bloggers who have an audience on their site and are very active in their own comments will, naturally, have a higher clout... this does not make their opinion valuable on a global scale at all.

Here's a suggestion for Disqus Devs: Do not allow clout to be issued to someone at their own site. That alone would add a huge dimension of credibility to the whole system, imo.
  • Yeah I always thought you should get some clout just if you are commenting and having discussions rather then having others give you a point or take one away. look forward to seeing what the disqus gang does with this one.
  • Me too. At least they have a somewhat 'blank slate' to work with, essentially. If they change how clout works drastically it won't make a lot of people upset.
  • oh and FYI I gave ya some clout as well :)
  • I didn't even know about clout. I'm definitely not stressing out over it.
  • Good for you! Nobody should, really.
  • I think it probably is a little more complicated than that, but you're right it looks to be mostly affected by the ratings.

Do they plan on releasing more info on this? Has anyone received clout without getting rated (if there's even a way to check)?
  • Can I join? :p

    Nice read ^_^
  • Definitely! Welcome to the clout club!
  • for the good of the community, CenterNetworks has voted everyone up here increasing their clout. Please remember this when you visit CN :-P
  • Well yah. Right now clout doesn't give much weight. When I first saw it, I really ignored it, I didn't even both to read what clout is coz I figured "it's just the same like the rest, easy to game". But for some weird reason, no one is gaming it. Does that mean "comment rating" is, well... not important and useless?

If that's the case, then the Entrecard+SezWho partnership is useless as well (no wonder Entrecard's contest is geared towards the use of SezWho's comment-rank system). Or maybe I misunderstood their contest :p hehe.. [Sorry for the off-topic.]
  • Someone had negative count on my site until recently, when everyone's Clout went up. No idea why, either. I'm confused. Did something change?
  • Well, Disqus revamped its site and WP plugin just today, so maybe they did some work on their karma system. It wouldn't surprise me.
  • I think clout is pretty meaningless apart from being used as an additional means to blacklist spammers.

  • Good post. Interesting list with some of the more famous DISQUS users.
