RSS Reset Update

rss-icons About a week ago, Corvida and I kicked off a plan that is now known as RSS Reset.  In my original post, I said I would check back periodically and let you know how I was doing.  And here we are!

In the first followup post, I listed the 40-odd subscriptions I felt could survive the cut (and that I was still interested in following).  I’m not going to re-list all of them here, but let’s touch on the changes:

Feed A / R? Readership Reason / Description
infocalypse Added unknown Eric Rice’s blog.  Added it even on the off-chance it was too big because he always writes about offbeat things.
Michelle’s Blog Added relatively small I found Michelle’s blog through a tweet.  She’s based in Austin.
Not The Knowing One Added small This is my friend Zoey’s blog.  She is a biochemist.
scribkin – Techmeme Search Added me Another biz blog to alert me for scribkin news.
Regular Geek Added A bit bigger than the cap, but since I chat with Rob on friendfeed, I made an exception.
Tw3nty3ight.com Added Billy is a friend of Jeff from (jeff)isageek.  An easy add.
#comments Added Felix appeared on my radar in friendfeed.  He wrote a great little FF app and his blog is even parts thoughtful and funny.
Blog by Jon Bishop Added 30 Jon wrote an article comparing Plurk and Twitter that I quite liked.
nerdflood Added 10 I gotta admit, I love the name.  I follow Nathaniel Payne on friendfeed.
Marketing Nirvana Added Unknown I believe I saw a shared post of Mario’s and decided to add his blog.  A bit of a gamble seeing that I do not know how big his readership is.
Weblog Tools Collection Added Can I make this a business-related follow?  Otherwise, it’s a clear exception.
Colin Walker Added unknown Colin Walker found my blog and has been a consistent commenter and social media blogger.
Scoble’s Link Blog Removed unknown I think I meant to add Scoble’s primary blog feed.
Scobleizer — Tech geek blogger Added huge This is a clear exception to the rules, but worth it.  Toluu had a problem with this feed, and kept adding the link blog instead.
Lifehacker: Top Added big Another exceptional feed, but I tempered the flow by only subscribing to entries tagged top.
notes, thoughts, ideas and responses Added Julian Baldwin is another friendfeed add.  A consistent interesting read.
I’m Not Actually a Geek Added unknown Hutch Carpenter is very active on twitter and friendfeed, and always has smashing good posts.
RB | Climbing Added unknown A new compilation feed similar to RSSmeme, but by the clever folks at ReadBurner.
Penny Arcade Added unknown Penny Arcade is a very popular webcomic.
A Better Cyanide & Happiness Feed Added unknown A friend of mine found this Yahoo-Pipe-enabled hack that re-inserts the webcomic back into the feed.
(jeff)isageek.net Added unknown Jeff is an avid social media and new technology fan, and has a great blog.

Overall, I think I am getting 90% of the news I was getting before, but at (guesstimating) 10% the rate!  I honestly don’t get more than 100 – 200 updates a day now, which is very nice.  I don’t think I’m quite there with finding really unusual new stuff, and I do want to add more Google Reader shared feeds, but this is a great start.

Oh, one more note.  I am sharing a lot more of the articles that I am reading now too.  It used to be I shared maybe one out 100 articles, now it’s closer to 1 out of 10.  So that’s a clear sign that the amount of redundant noise has gone down significantly.

On a final note, I am now subscribed both to a RSSmeme popular shared articles feed, and a ReadBurner popular shared articles feed.  I’m seeing a lot of duplication between these two.  At some point, I am going to have to decide which one to go with, but for this last week I wanted to give them both a fair shake and see if I distinctly like one more than the other.

  • I'm excited to see how this turns out for you. Obviously I hope you end up choosing RSSmeme but even if you sway towards ReadBurner I'd like to hear why and hopefully win you back with some improvements.
  • Ok Benjamin, you got it. I'll try to make a list of pros and cons this week and see if I can come to a decision.
  • Great! I'm curious what RSSmeme feed you are using. Are you taking advantage of any complex filters (language/min share count/etc)?
  • Actually, I'm using the straight FriendFeed Friends RSS feed from RSSmeme. You're right though, I should probably re-visit it to see if there is any tweaking I can do.
  • The FriendFeed friends feed is great; glad someone is using it :)
  • Glad I made the cut! I'm not bold enough to go with the whole reset thing, but I've been paring back on FriendFeed subscriptions and finding new ones, which has been working quite well.
  • Your blog definitely makes the cut, felix. It may not be hardcore 100% social media, but the diversity of articles is actually very refreshing. I quite enjoy it!
  • Wow! I am flattered! Thank you!
  • Sure man! I still think you should start writing up some cell phone reviews though! :)
  • Thanks for the inclusion Phil. I really appreciate it and it's fascinating to watch your journey through this.

I tend to cull my feeds from time to time but have never been race enough to go this far with it. It's interesting to note the 90 - 10 figures yuou've been getting with regards to news vs feeds - just goes to show how much recycling goes on.
  • Sure Colin, you are definitely one my to-read list. As for my estimates, they are quite rough. I'm not one to measure everything I do every moment of the day, so I can only describe in relative terms how my new feed mix feels. Hopefully it gives people a good sense of what will happen, though, if they try it themselves.
  • If you're looking for more people's shared items to read, check out mine http://www.google.com/reader/shared/05188496536...

I share 2-3 articles per day on average, so you won't get too overloaded, it's usually a mix of technology, social media, and things that I find hilarious.
  • Thanks, Ryan! I will add your feed!
  • Glad to see all these great new feeds being shared on Toluu, I have already found a couple new ones because of you Phil.
  • Hutch Carpenter
Thanks man! Always nice to make the cut! I'd tell you the number of subscribers the blog has, but I really don't have a clue. BTW - nice use of Toluu for the subscription URLs.
  • Ah yes. To be honest it is easier for me to generate the table by dragging the links from Toluu into Live Writer. However, I realized after I did it on my first post that it also serves to drive people to Toluu and get set up to start sharing their feeds, without beating them over the heads with it. You get a nice feed view inside Toluu and the title links back to the blog.

I haven't had any complaints thus far, at any rate.
  • We have seen a little bump from this post especially. Glad our links are easy to post around!
  • I struggled with this problem long ago and that was what instigated my creation of blern.com. I wanted a site that would go out and find the interesting content for me, so I didn't have to wade around an ocean trying to find it. You might consider it...
  • blern has definitely popped up on my radar, mostly in ego-searches where I find where my blog entries have been linked. Now that you have raised it formally though, I'll go sign up for it and check it out.

    Thanks!
  • Hey, thanks for the add, heh. I've been working on managing my own signal and noise output, and surprisingly, my blog has been sparse lately as I'm in that identity crisis stage of 'yeah I love talking about geek things but my audience is not fully geeks'.

The most important things in my life tend to be the things I share on Google Reader and Flickr photos (accessible through friendfeed/spin). I don't wanna talk about twitter no mo'.
