Editorial Changes
June 25, 2008 – 12:01 am
I try not to bore you guys with every little thing that I do to and on this site, but if you visit regularly you are sure to see sidebar widgets come and go, font changes, page lineup changes, ad nauseum. But the changes I am thinking about today are going to affect the mix of content that I blog about.
In fact, it is mostly going to be additions. I want to have more ways I can write here, while still cleaving to the spirit of the site. First, let me recap the general post types I currently employ.
Review: These articles are supposed to be the ‘core’ of the site, and I admit I haven’t done a true review in a while. I have a few products I have been testing but I really have to be in the right mind-set to get a good review out.
- Traditionally the title has been in the form Tell Me About… but I’ve been strying from that. However, I will always categorize these articles as review.
- I will try to get at least one of these out a week.
- Examples:
Primer: Similar to a review, a primer covers a technology or terminology. I definitely haven’t done enough of these.. actually only two. Ouch. Do you guys have any suggestions?
- Title is in the form of What is… and I will try to stick with that.
- I reserve the right to write a primer instead of a review in a one-week period.
- I will write these whenever I believe they are needed or I feel inspired to.
- Examples:
Related News: These are articles that fall under the topics of breaking news, social media happenings, stuff other people are doing that I find interesting, etc. It’s sort of my kitchen sink of article types. As such, it has a LOT of articles.
- Titles can be whatever sounds good.
- I will write these whenever something should be blogged about.
- I’m going to stop putting breaking news in this category
- Examples:
Status: Ok, so I said that related news was the kitchen sink.. but this category similarly random, it contains all my posts that affect my site or projects I work on in relation to the site.
- Titles can be whatever sounds good.
- Written as needed.
- I’m going to be re-examining this category to see if I can re-categorize stuff that is already in there.
- Examples:
Here are the new categories I will be phasing in:
Opinion: I already have a few articles in this category, but I am going to go for a weekly thing. And I am strongly considering another category, Soapbox for articles that end up being a rant.
In Brief: I am going to try to write a short article every day with an open topic.. so basically, like status, above, but maybe one or two paragraphs.
Breaking News: I have a stated policy of not wanting to break news on new products or services, since I am not quite up to the task of reporting on every social media or tech news item out there. However, I may make an occasional exception if someone I have chatted with or know more than an acquaintance (or who asks really really nice) has some breaking news. I think I’m going to stick with my policy of not wanting exclusivity though, yet. Let that be a perk if this blog gets bigger.
Guest Post: I don’t really have my blog set up to have multiple bloggers, but I am always open to the occasional guest post, if a hopeful blogger is a decent writer and believes the time spent putting an article on my site is worth it. They will be categorized here.
Project: I am going to create a new category for site projects such as RSS Reset, so they can be found easier.
I know this isn’t the most engaging post in the world, but I thought it was important that I keep my readership in the loop. Please do let me know if you have any thoughts, suggestions or ideas in the comments. thanks!
