The Great Thing About Software from Startups

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

office Have you ever gotten excited about a product from a new startup, used it a bit, and then wandered off when it didn’t quite do what you wanted it to, or perhaps you you were using something already that is just slightly better?

That happens to me all the time.

But the great thing about most startups are their agility and drive to succeed.  If you take your eye off of them for a moment, when you re-visit them it seems like a whole lot of great new things happened during your absence.  Contrast this to some big, established web application companies where you are lucky to get a great new feature once a quarter or so.

PatienceI’m going to try something new in this post.  Aaron Brazell wrote an article on Technosailor recently noting the differences between western and eastern writing styles, especially when it comes to a column or opinion piece.  In my never-ending quest to explore new avenues, I will try my hand at a more eastern-style column.

Road Runner's official logo and mascot

This has been brought up in the past, but recently I’ve noticed that my Internet Service Provider (ISP), Road Runner from Time Warner Cable, has decided that when I typo on the location bar, it’s perfectly acceptable to send me to a not-so-helpful search result page.

Toluu Just Got Better: New Feed Page Views and More!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

toluu-icon Many of my regular readers will be familiar with Toluu because I have linked to it quite a bit, especially in my RSS Reset articles.  Toluu is a useful, unique utility that allows you to build a portfolio of RSS feeds that you subscribe to, and then using a matching algorithm, receive recommendations for feeds that you might like and other Toluu users that have similar tastes as you.

My use of Toluu has grown these past few weeks to the point where it has become a permanent addition to the list of useful sites I hit almost every day.  So imagine how pleased I was to hear that Toluu was going to add some great new features today!

WinExtra’s New Sunday Blog Review: First Up, scribkin!

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

winextra-logo It was with complete surprise that I learned tonight that this blog was chosen to be the very first on WinExtra‘s new series, the Sunday Blog Review

I was looking forward to seeing the review, as Steven Hodson had promoted the series earlier in the day.  I just happened to be on FriendFeed when it picked up Steven’s tweet about the new article:

tweetshot-winextra

Of course, I replied immediately in utter disbelief, and rushed over to check out the article.

Overall, I am completely flattered and honored that Steven chose my site to be reviewed.  This attention really helps reinforce my resolve to continue writing solid, helpful posts and news into the future.  And with that resolve comes a new awareness of networking.

While each of our blogs may be an island, its important to remember that when reading something interesting or useful, link it up if you write about that subject later.  It will add depth to your article and raise awareness for the other site.

Now, head over to WinExtra and check out the article!
